The US university system is considered to be the most advanced and performing educational system in the world. It is made up of over 4,300 universities and post-graduate education institutions with nearly 14 million students, 570.000 of whom are international students. In order to be able to apply in the university system, a student has to graduate 12 grades and take one of the two national graduation exams: SAT or ACT. Any international student must meet the same requirements to be admitted to the more known and prestigious universities.
The tertiary education system in the US is organized in:
Bachelor’s Degree or Undergraduate Studies.
Tuition costs $ 6,000 – 50,000 / year
University merit or social scholarship: generally up to 30% of tuition costs, but in exceptional cases 100% scholarships can also be awarded.
Job part-time: 300 $ / month
The Bachelor’s degree is awarded in the USA after four years of university education. These bachelor studies are taught only within the 4-year colleges and universities. The so-called Associate Degrees are awarded by the 2-year colleges to give students a quick (two-year) qualification to start a career. These intermediate degrees are equivalent to the subjects studied with the first two years of a normal Bachelor’s programme. Bachelor studies provide students with increased flexibility especially during the first 2 years of study, so that they can opt for a wide variety of subjects studied, then in Year 3 decide on a few who will become Major or Minor (specialization). Thus, a student may opt for a Double Major or a Major and one or two Minors (a specialization and two maximum two Sub-Specializations). The range of specializations is over 900 topics and fields.
Master Degree or Postgraduate Studies
Tuition cost $ 15,000 – 50,000 / year
Funding opportunities: University’s merit or needs scholarship: generally up to 30% of tuition fee costs, but in exceptional cases 100% scholarships can also be awarded.
Part-time Job: 300 $ / month
The range of existing specializations is limited to 450 in comparison to 900 Bachelor’s programmes. Master’s studies last from 1 to 2 years.

After I’ve decided in the last seconds that I want to study in Great Britain, with the help of my counsellor, I managed to open the way to my own dream. My first week spent at Birmingham City University has been dedicated to international students and all the activities I’ve been involved in taught me that friendships can be created regardless of your native language, religion or colour. I met hundreds of students and now I have friends from all over the world. Being an international student is a way to develop my personal skills and integrate better into society.
I am really enjoying my student life here, the professors are very open and willing to help and so are my colleagues. KEA was certainly the perfect decision for me and Denmark as well. Before I got there, I was worried about all the necessary documents and procedures, but I was surprised how easy everything was in the end. All the university representatives are smiling and help you no matter what, and if you experience difficulties, everything is quickly solved.
It might seem impossible to become a student in the UK, but if you’re surrounded by lovely people that are willing to support you, then it’s easier than it seems. Besides my family, my EDMUNDO counsellor helped me a lot in achieving my goal, and every time I needed a piece of advice regarding the application, she knew what to tell me. Her willingness to help students like me, makes me now so grateful and so happy, because I’m aware that without her support I wouldn’t have been here.
